Peace Walk is the journal of a Quaker-educated African American woman who walked from Seattle to the United Nations in New York for the causes of peace, justice, and environmental protection in 1983.
It tells of her encouragement from people and animals, her discouragement from the long miles ahead, and her triumphant walk across the George Washington bridge, running the final two miles to the U.N.
On June 1, 1983, Esther “Little Dove” John took off for a six-month peace walk from Seattle to New York City. She traveled with just a borrowed backpack, a change of clothes, and lots of socks. She traveled with a faith that people were basically good. And with that belief, over and over again, she received kind help from a wide variety of people along the way. She listened and recorded their thoughts and concerns about the world. She brought those messages to the General Assembly of the United Nations on December 7, 1983. Peace Walk describes her faith-filled journey.
